In the 1850s and 1860s, a sanitation movement had begun to take shape in modern countries. Governments realized that their ramshackle cities were contributing to the poor health of its citizens. Typically, drinking water was sourced from supplies directly connect to cesspools (which is where everyone dumped their feces and urine). There were very few sewage systems that could handle the huge populations of people who had moved into the cities. They began to build delivery systems that allowed residents to have clean water. They began to design sewage systems that could safely remove human waste and dispose of it properly.
